The Castle of San Clemente in Valle has its own fortified centre called literally San Clemente, and several annexes – Contea, Salci, Casa Santino – which constitute its districts. It appears like a very homogeneous aggregate of stone buildings around the church of San Clemente, information on which has existed ever since a document of 1068. In its present form it recalls the many others that – for unknown reasons – lost their early Romanesque conformation, and were transformed into very simple buildings with a rectangular design. The style recalled late Gothic, and the trussed ceiling was supported by large arches. The exposed walls appeared to be of ordered veins of sandstone.
